As anyone who has been camping will tell you, there is more often than not very minimal lighting at a campsite – barring certain areas, such as communal toilets or the main reception area, everywhere else will be in the dark once the sun goes down… and rightly so, you don’t want artificial lighting stopping you from getting to sleep in your tent.
But what this also means is that your campsite can be literally pitch black in the dead of the night, depending on where you’ve set up…
So, you need your own artificial lighting for nighttime… obviously torches come to mind and they are extremely important at camp, but equally important is the ability to light up your campsite with the use of lanterns and the like – these can give a 360º field of light that a regular torch will not be able to.
I’m going to be taking a look at the Olantern Mini Camping Light to see if this Olight Lantern can do the job of sufficiently lighting up your campsite at night.

It’s powered by a customized 2000mAh 3.7V 26350 rechargeable lithium-ion battery (built-in).
It weighs only 239g, which is very light for a lantern and it’s also extremely compact with a height of just under 10cm and a diameter of just over 5cm.

Key Features
Light Quality
The Olantern Mini has a tornado-shaped light diffuser that produces a 360º balanced, uniform beam – the diffuser softens the light output, thus reducing eye strain.
I found the light to be very comfortable to use, even for an extended period of time.
Mode 1 (150 lumens) is bright enough to light up a small campsite.
Mode 2 (50 lumens) is sufficient for lighting up a small area, such as a dining table.
Mode 3 (15 lumens) is useful for use in a smaller, closed setting – such as inside a tent.
The Olantern Mini also features a night vision preserving red light (1 lumen) which is ideal for situations where you just need to see where you’re going or looking for something quickly.
Charging
The Olantern Mini features a built-in lithium-ion battery that can be charged quickly using the included USB magnetic charging cable.
The magnetic charging cable is used by the majority of Olight torches and lights and is a very quick and practical charging method.
The magnet at the base of the lantern easily attracts the charging base and can be done with one hand.
There is a standard USB on the other end that can be used with any USB plug or portable battery.
The magnetic pad on the cable has a charging light next to it that lights up red when charging and green once fully charged and it takes 3.5 hours to fully charge the batteries from flat.
There is also a battery indicator located on the power button that shows the battery level as indicated below:
- Green: >70% battery power
- Orange: 30-70% battery power
- Red: <30% battery power
Power Button, Modes & Motion Sensor
The power button is located on the side of the lantern and features a motion sensor… when the motion sensor senses movement – the indicator around the button will light up, allowing you to read the battery level and locate the button in the dark.
The motion sensor is an extremely useful feature that prevents fumbling around in the dark trying to find the switch, it detects the slightest motion even to the surface that the Olantern is sitting on.
A short press of the power button switches the lantern on and off.
To cycle through the three modes, switch the lantern on and then hold down the power button.
When switched on, the Olantern will return to the mode it was on when it was last switched off.
Double tapping the power button will activate the red light (this works whether the light is on or off).
The lantern can also be locked by pressing and holding the power button, while it is off, for a few seconds – pressing and holding it again unlocks it.
When the lantern is locked, the power button battery level indicator will light up red when pressed.
Body
The body is mainly made of a zinc alloy – this allows it to be tough yet lightweight.
The base is made of a texturised rubber that grips very well to virtually any surface and prevents slipping.
Hanging Hook
The hanging hook is a useful addition for carrying or if you want to hang the lantern from a tree branch or other protrusion.

Conclusion & Exclusive Offer
What I’ve come to notice with Olight is that they pay a great deal of attention to detail – they’re not satisfied with just producing a good product… they want to make a near perfect product, such that when you’re out in the elements you’re not left wishing for a certain feature that would make your life easier in that situation.
The Olantern Mini is no exception to this – from the motion sensor that allows you to instantly see where the power button is by simply tapping the surface that the Olantern is on to the red light that is great for preserving night vision.
But what I really like about the Olantern Mini is its size – it’s so small that you can literally put it in your trouser pocket, thus making it exceedingly portable and a great addition to any camping equipment.
Personally I found the Mini to be fine for a campsite consisting of about 5-6 tents, any larger and you may want to go for the original Olantern that has a maximum output of 360 lumens.
