There’s nothing quite like eating food that’s been cooked on a fire – I absolutely love campfire cooked food, for me it’s possibly the best part of camp…
And when not at camp, BBQs are just as good (if not better) – so when the weather’s good, we try to have a BBQ in the garden as often as we can.
Wouldn’t it be good to be able to have barbecued food in places other than the garden or at camp?
Well, with the portable Weber Smokey Joe Premium Charcoal BBQ Grill, you can do just that…
You can take it down to the beach or to the park or even camping (if you don’t want the hassle of setting up a campfire…).
Design And Features
- Main bowl and lid: porcelain-enamelled
- Cooking grate: plated steel
- Fuel grate: heavy-gauge steel
- Handle: glass-reinforced nylon
- Dampers: rust-resistant aluminium
The legs are very stable and just long enough to keep the base of the main body off the ground or any other surface it’s placed on – while at the same time giving it a low centre of gravity, meaning it will not get knocked or blown over.
There is a long, thin handle attached to the main body – when the lid is closed, this handle can be clipped to the lid’s carry handle.
This secures the lid firmly in place and also allows the Smokey Joe to be easily carried – even when it has hot coals inside.
The Smokey Joe Premium is very practical.
The thin body handle drops down and hooks onto a vertical support, creating a ridge that can support the lid open – this gives you somewhere to keep the lid, instead of having to put it on the floor and also gives the advantage of creating a windshield.
Located under the handle is a heat shield, which prevents the handle from getting too hot.
There is also a vent on the lid to control airflow, this gives the ability to control the internal temperature.
There are three dampers – two are located where the long thin handle attaches to the main body and the other where the vertical support (which the thin handle attaches to) attaches to the bowl.
Inside there is the main cooking grate, a smaller charcoal grate and an ash catcher.
There is no vent at the bottom of the main body, that the majority of bigger BBQs have – a bottom vent is very useful for controlling the fire optimally and you could say that this is possibly the only negative aspect of the Smokey Joe Premium.
Having said that – not having a vent at the bottom could, actually, be a good thing as it makes the BBQ easier to carry, with no risk of hot coal or ash spilling out from the bottom.
Setting up the Smokey Joe Premium is very straight forward.
It takes about ten minutes to attach the legs and handles and then you’re good to go.
The cooking area is 35cm in diameter, this would be enough for a small family, but no more – to be honest, that’s about right for a portable BBQ – any bigger and it would probably be too heavy.
Cooking is steady and even – it’s not very fast, compared to more heavy-weight alternatives – but it will get the job done nicely.
The Smokey Joe Premium has a 10 year limited warranty as specified below:
Bowl and lid: 10 years, not rust through/burn through.
Plastic Components: 5 years, excluding fading or discolouration.
All remaining parts: 2 years
All in all the Weber Smokey Joe Premium Charcoal BBQ Grill is a very good portable BBQ and you’ll struggle to find a better one.
I found the design and functionality of it to be very good and practical.
It’s great for being able to enjoy the beautiful taste of barbecued food virtually anywhere.
