Spring is round the corner and with that thoughts of camping ‘spring’ to mind…
I know the world is in a bit of weird place at the moment – but that’s not going to last forever… and at some point, hopefully in the not too distant future – we are going to get back to some semblance of normality.
One of the items often missed out on people’s camping kit list is a camping chair, especially those who are relatively new to camping… they’ll remember their tent and their sleeping bag and even the all important ground mat (important even in the summer!) – but what about when you want to take the weight of your feet during the day and just sit down with a nice cup of tea?
And even if you’re not of the mind to go camping – camping chairs are an excellent way of relaxing in the park or at the beach or even in the garden…
Overview
The Kestrel Deluxe Camping Chair by Trail Outdoor Leisure has the following key features as per the manufacturer’s website:
- Extra-high backrest provides superior support to reduce aches and pains if you’re seated for a long period of time.
- Padded panels for ultimate comfort with breathable mesh ‘target points’ to reduce clamminess when seated.
- Insulated cup holder to keep a refreshing beverage by your side and shoulder bag to easily carry when folded away.
- Size: H104cm x W88cm x D58cm (45cm seat height). Folded: H92cm x W15cm x D15cm. Weight capacity: 120kg.
I’m going to be taking a detailed look at this camping chair to see if it can live up to the job of providing a nice break during what often is a busy schedule at camp (at least for my Scouts and I when we go…).
Features
Extra-high Backrest
The extra-high backrest supports the upper back very well and also has a decent amount of padding – combined it gives real support to the body.
I find that camping chairs that don’t have a high back are fine initially, but after sitting in them for any length of time – it soon becomes uncomfortable when the upper back is not supported.
In addition, the backrest is high enough to allow you to rest your head back – however, I found this to be uncomfortable… you would need to place a cushion or a pillow there to support your neck.
Padded Panels
There are padded panels with a “breathable mesh” located at strategic points – these have a two-fold benefit…
- They give extra padding and hence comfort in areas where pressure is likely to build, especially the area located at the front of the seat.
- It stops excess sweating and “clamminess” in those strategic areas, by allowing air to flow.
Stability
Insulated Cup Holder
Cup holders are always useful – if I’m taking a rest at camp, I’m normally doing it with a cup of tea… so this is a must feature for me.
The cup holder is big enough to take a camping mug of the type shown in the picture below.
Portability
The Kestrel is extremely portable and thanks to its scissor frame is very quick and easy to set up and fold away.
When folded it measures approximately 92cm x 15cm x 15cm and weighs approximately 3.5kg.
There is also a travel bag with a shoulder strap for ease of carry.
Arm Rests
The side rests are wide enough to comfortably rest your arms on and you can even place items on them such as a mobile phone without it falling off.
Colours
The Kestrel is available in five colours – blue, green, pink, purple and red.
I would have preferred a blue one, but my daughter insisted we get a purple one ??♂️… but having received it, I’ve come to quite like the colour.
Conclusion
I tried the Kestrel for several hours and was very comfortable for the whole time, especially the front of the seat – I find many camping chairs dig into the bottom of my thighs in that area, but this was not the case with this one.
If I’m being picky, there is one area that I feel could maybe be improved and that is the headrest – if it had a bit more cushioning and protruded out a bit, then this would be more comfortable for the neck… having said that, a small cushion can be used to solve that problem.
But all in all The Kestrel Deluxe is an excellent camping chair that offers superb support and comfort at a very reasonable price.
It’s available from Trail Outdoor Leisure.

Mohammad
Hello, Mohammad, the weather is getting warming and camping or picnic is a great time to spend with the family and friends. This Kestrel Deluxe camping chair seems a great product at an affordable price. To feel comfortable and enjoy camping for only 25 bucks, for me, is worth the money.
Thank you for sharing your experience with it and where to buy this chair.
Alketa
Hi – agreed, definitely worth the money at £25…
Hi Mohammad,
I like your review of the Kestrel Deluxe High Back Camping Chair. I too find it hard to want to buy a chair that hurts my thighs when I sit in them. I am glad to know this one is different. Also, good to know it can hold a good cup of tea, I too am a tea drinker.
You keep your blog post simple and to the point; I love that! I checked out your website and it is nice and clean. I love your pictures; they make your website look refreshing just like the outdoors. This makes me want to grab a good book, get my Kestrel Deluxe High Back Camping Chair, and find some spring sunny nature to relax in.
Keep up the good work. Lily
Hi Lily – thanks for the feedback… I too love a good book to go with the sun!
I have been looking into camp chairs that are durable and last a few camp seasons. I’ve always bought cheap ones that last one fishing season and by the end of the summer they’re broken and falling apart. i want to buy a good one, one that I know is going to last me a few years and be comfortable and easy to hike with.
The good thing about the Trail Kestrel chair is that its build quality is good and it’s relatively cheap… should last a fair few years.
