Sleeping bags are an essential part of your camping kit list… if you don’t have the right type for the time of year and location that you will be camping at – then you could end up having a miserable, sleepless night.
I’ve seen may novice campers, who don’t pay much attention when getting their sleeping bag for their kit list – they’ll literally buy the cheapest one available, paying no attention to details. I’ve even seen some of them come to a winter camp with a summer sleeping bag!
In this article I’m going to be looking at the Mountain Hardwear Lamina 0 Sleeping Bag and seeing whether it lives up to its claim of being a great cold weather sleeping bag.
Available from:
Material And Technology
The shell is made of 30D Nylon Ripstop (100% Nylon) and the lining of 40D Polyester Plain Weave (100% Nylon) – it is mildly water resistant, but won’t handle excess water.
It is constructed of synthetic Thermal-Q insulation and has laminated technology, which basically means that the insulation is laminated to the shell – in other words, stitching through the insulation is not needed, this prevents cold spots in the areas where any stitching would have been.

This sleeping bag actually has a lot of loft for a synthetic bag.
The inside is made up of a very soft polyester, which is moisture-wicking – it keeps the sweat off you and out of the insulation, this in turn prevents the inside from becoming wet due to condensation.
So if you are one of those cocoon sleepers (like me), who like to put the bag over you head while sleeping – then you shouldn’t have too much of a problem with the inside becoming damp while using this sleeping bag.
The softer material inside also means that it doesn’t conduct cold as much as the more ‘slicker’ types of materials.
Another useful design feature is the ergonomic shaped foot box – this gives extra room at the bottom and prevents one’s feet pressing on the insulation, which could create cold spots and discomfort while sleeping.
Temperature Range
The ‘0’ in the name indicates that it is good down to 0°F or -18°C. In actual fact it’s comfortable down to -10°C, anything below that would require extra layers to remain comfortable.
EN TEMP RATING: Comfort: -11°C / Limit: -18ºC / Extreme: -38ºC
To be honest, anything below -18°C will not be comfortable even with layers on…
Features
The Lamina 0 has a few useful design features
There’s an internal zip pocket – this is useful for storing your mobile, camera etc…
It has an anti-snag zip, however a lot of users have reported that the zip still does sometimes snag (but to be honest, I haven’t come across a sleeping bag that doesn’t…)
It has a draft collar, which can be wrapped around the shoulders/neck and tightened down, using a pull cord to stop any drafts coming in.
There are actually two pull cords for the draft collar – one that tightens it and a second one that compresses it.
This is the same for the hood, two pull cords – one to tighten and the other to compress. The result is a very snug fit that exposes only your eyes, nose and mouth and prevents any drafts from coming in.
The bag has a two sided zip, that can be closed and opened from inside and outside.
It also packs down quite nicely using the compression sack.
Summary of technology and features:
- Welded Lamina construction enhances loft and eliminates cold spots
- Shaped draft collar to block the escape of warm air from inside the bag
- Contoured footbox to allow natural foot position for maximum warmth and comfort
- Tailored hood to block drafts and seal in warmth
- Two-way anti-snag zipper
- 30D nylon ripstop shell fabric is lightweight and compressible
- Glow in the dark, reflective zipper pull
- Nylon compression sack and mesh storage sack included
- Durable water-repellent finish
- Left hand and right hand zippers available for zip-together functionality
- Two-way zipper allows for easy ventilation

Conclusion
The Mountain Hardwear Lamina 0 is a really good season 4 sleeping bag, that won’t break the bank.
It should definitely keep you warm enough down to about -10°C and it’s also fairly light to carry – there are other options out there that can compress down a fair bit smaller, mostly down sleeping bags, but they’ll cost you a fair bit more.
If you’re planning on going backpacking camping, then you’ll probably want something a bit lighter and more compressible – but if you’re going on a regular camping trip in the winter, then I would highly recommend the Mountain Hardwear Lamina 0 Sleeping Bag to keep you warm at night and give you a good night sleep, so that you wake up rested and refreshed to tackle the day ahead!
